Wedeking shines as Eagles win NJCAA opener

OXFORD, Ala. - Kori Wedeking continued her magical season at the NJCAA Division II national softball tournament Tuesday.
 
Wedeking tossed a five-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as the sixth-seeded Kirkwood Eagles blanked 11th-seeded Madison Tech, 5-0, in the opening round of the tournament at Choccolocco Park in Alabama.
 
Wedeking (29-3) leads the nation in victories this year. She did not walk a single batter in her masterpiece.
 
Kirkwood (53-10) is scheduled to face third-seeded Louisburg (45-6) in the quarterfinals Wednesday at 4 p.m.
 
Peggy Klingler went 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI to pace the Eagles. Brooke Kilburg was 2-for-3 and drove in two runs. Sydney Albaugh went 2-for-4. Emilee Linder scored twice.
 
The first round of the national tournament went according to form, with all eight of the top seeds prevailing.
