Championships

Since first fielding an intercollegiate program in 1969, Kirkwood has gone on to win fourteen national championships and numerous national tournament appearances. Quick recaps of Kirkwood's fourteen national championships are listed below.

 

The 2023 NJCAA DII Men's Golf National Championship was held at Swan Lake National Golf Resort in Plymouth, Indiana.

The 2021-22 Kirkwood Women's Basketball team won the school's 13th NJCAA National Title. This is Coach Kim Muhl's and the women's basketball program's eighth national title.  Coach Muhl was awarded Region XI Coach of Year for the 15th time in his career, along with being named Coach of the National Tournament.  Tasia Jordan was the National Tournament MVP, Kortney Drake and Ashley Tull were also on the All-Tournament Team.  The Eagles defeated Morton College (Cicero, IL) in the championship game by a score of 49-44. The '22 sophomores transferring on to play are; Kortney Drake to Northern Illinois University, Ashley Tull to (Central Missouri University), Tati Hodges-Johnson to Northern Illinois University, and Dom Rodriguez to Coker University and Corey Whitlock Augustana College.  Karsyn Stratton, Naya Haymon, and Tasia Jordan will be returning to Kirkwood for their third seasons.

The 2018-19 Kirkwood Men's Basketball team won the school's 12th NJCAA National Title. This was Coach Bryan Petersen's second National Championship and the men's basketball program's third title overall. Petersen's team went 31-4 for the 2018-19 season. Coach Petersen was awarded District Coach of the Year as well as the 2018-19 Spalding National Coach of the Year. The Eagles defeated Johnson Co. Community College (KS) in the championship game by a score of 64-58. Sophomore Douglas Wilson was named Spalding® NJCAA National Player of the Year.  The '19 team sent sophomores Douglas Wilson to South Dakota State University (NCAA D1), Kyle Arrington to Western Illinois University (NCAA D1), and Allante' Pickens to Flagler College (NCAA D2).

The 2017 Kirkwood Women's Basketball team won the school's 11th and most recent NJCAA National Title. This is Coach Kim Muhl's seventh national title. This season marked a historic milestone for Kirkwood women's basketball as it was the first time in program and school history that a team went through a season undefeated, going a perfect 37-0. Coach Muhl was awarded Region XI Coach of Year for the 14th time in his career, along with being named National Coach of the Year as well. The Eagles defeated Johnson County Community College (Kansas) in the championship game by a score of 61-46. The '17 team sent sophomores Simone Goods to Illinois State University, Deleyah Harris to West Texas A&M, Shaneequah Watkins to (TBA), and Rylee Voss to Grand View University. The freshman on the team ended their sophomore season with a 34-4 record and here is where they transferred: Tayana Wilson to Limestone College, Nyachristmas Puok to University Texas - Permian Basin, Awal Ajak to Univerisity Missouri - Kansas City, Niaja Taylor to William Penn University, Olivia Usher to Missouri Western State University.

The 2016 Kirkwood Men's Basketball team won the school's tenth NJCAA National Title. This was Coach Bryan Petersen's first National Championship and the men's basketball program's second title overall. Petersen's team went 31-4 for the 2016 season. Coach Petersen was awarded District Coach of the Year as well as the 2016 Spalding National Coach of the Year. The Eagles defeated Triton College (IL) in the championship game by a score of 83-76. The '16 team sent sophomores Hunter Rhodes to the University of Northern Iowa (NCAA D1), Nick Richards to Wilmington University (NCAA D2), and Cristen Wilson to Lewis University (NCAA D2). The freshman on the team ended their sophomore season with a 25-7 record and here is where they transferred: TBA

The 2010 Kirkwood Women's Basketball team won the school's ninth NJCAA National Title. This was Coach Kim Muhl's sixth title and his fourth consecutive National Championship -- a feat has never been accomplished by another NJCAA Women's Basketball program and a feat that has been accomplished by only five other collegiate basketball programs (NCAA D1 Men, UCLA, 1967-1973, 7 titles in a row), (NCAA D3 Women, University of Washington- St. Louis, 1998-2001, 4 titles in a row), (NCAA D2 Women, North Dakota State University, 1993-1996, 4 titles in a row)(NAIA Women, Southern Nazarene University, 1994-1997, 4 titles in a row) and (NAIA Women, Oklahoma City University, 1999-2002, 4 titles in a row). Muhl's team went 37-1 for the 2010 season. Coach Muhl was awarded Region XI Coach of Year for the fourteenth time in his career (1990, 1995, 1997-1999, 2002-2010) and named Outstanding Coach of the Tournament for the sixth time (1997, 2002, 2007-2010). The Eagles defeated Patrick Henry Community College (Virginia) in the championship game by a score of 72-62. The '10 team sent sophomores Kari Goodchild to Quinnipiac University (NCAA D1), Staci Gillum to the University of Evansville (NCAA D1), Andi Waugaman to Marquette University (NCAA D1), and Kalli Hansen to the University of Iowa (NCAA D1). The freshman on the team ended their sophomore season with a 25-7 record and ended the Eagles' run of nine straight National Tournament appearances, here is where they transferred: Taylor Smith to Truman State University (NCAA D2), Rachael Remick to Truman State University (NCAA D2), and Diamon Beckford to Kent State University (NCAA D1).

The 2009 Kirkwood Women's Basketball team won the school's eighth NJCAA National Title. This is Coach Kim Muhl's fifth national title and his third in a row, making Kirkwood the second NJCAA Women's Basketball team (all divisions) to win three National Championships in a row. His team went 36-1. Coach Muhl was awarded with Region XI Coach of Year for the thirteenth time in his career (1990, 1995, 1997-1999, 2002-2009) and named Outstanding Coach of the Tournament for the fifth time (1997, 2002, 2007-2009). The Eagles defeated Schoolcraft College (Michigan) in the championship game by a score of 78-53. The '09 team sent sophomores Jayne Strand to Northern Colorado University (NCAA D1), MyKenya Johnson to Southern Polytechnic State University (NAIA), and El Sara Greer to Oregon State University (NCAA D1). The freshman on the team ended their sophomore season with a 37-1 record and an unheard-of fourth consecutive National Championship in 2010, here is where they transferred: Kari Goodchild to Quinnipiac University (NCAA D1), Staci Gillum to University of Evansville (NCAA D1), Andi Oordt to Marquette University (NCAA D1) and Kalli Hansen to University of Iowa (NCAA D1).

The 2008 Kirkwood Women's Basketball team won the school's seventh NJCAA National Title. This would be Coach Kim Muhl's fourth national championship and a place in history being one of six NJCAA programs (all divisions) to win back-to-back titles. Muhl's team went 31-6 and for the seventh consecutive year the Eagle Women's Basketball team placed at the national tournament (2002- National Champions, 2003- 4th Place, 2004- 3rd Place, 2005- 4th Place, 2006- National Runner-Up, 2007- National Champions). Coach Muhl was awarded Region XI Coach of Year for the twelfth time in his career (1990- 1995- 1997- 1998- 1999- 2002- 2003- 2004- 2005- 2006- 2007- 2008) and named Outstanding Coach of the Tournament for the fourth time (1997- 2002- 2007- 2008). The Eagles defeated Kankakee Community College (Illinois) in the championship game by a score of 78-53. The '08 team sent sophomores Allie Lindemann to Siena University (NCAA D1), Rachele Monroe to University of New Orleans (NCAA D1), Ashley Gorsh to University of New Orleans (NCAA D1), Breann Hill to Marquette University (NCAA D1) and Lauren Thomas-Johnson to Marquette University (NCAA D1). The freshman on the team ended their sophomore season with a 36-1 record and a back-to-back-to-back National Championship in 2009, here is where they transferred: Jayne Strand to Northern Colorado University (NCAA D1), MyKenya Johnson to Southern Polytechnic State University (NAIA), and El Sara Greer to Oregon State University (NCAA D1).

The 2007 Kirkwood Women's Basketball team won the school's sixth NJCAA National Title. This would be Coach Kim Muhl's third national title (1997 and 2002) as his team went 35-1 and stopped the drought- after Kirkwood's national championship in 2002 the Eagles finished 4th in 2003, 3rd in 2004, 4th in 2005, and was National Runner-Up in 2006. Coach Muhl was awarded Region XI Coach of Year for the eleventh time in his career (1990- 1995- 1997- 1998- 1999- 2002- 2003- 2004- 2005- 2006- 2007) and named Outstanding Coach of the Tournament for the third time (1997- 2002- 2007). Muhl was also awarded Russell Athletic JC/CC Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). The Eagles defeated Kankakee Community College (Illinois) in the championship game by a score of 84-55. The '07 team sent sophomores Kaitlin Schneden to Baker University (NAIA), Maggie O'Connell to Indiana Purdue- Fort Wayne University (NCAA D1) Amanda Brodsack to University of Nebraska- Omaha (NCAA D2), Kayla Pospisil to Arkansas State University (NCAA D1), Jazmine Sepulveda to University of South Florida (NCAA D1), Kelsey Homewood to Winona State University (NCAA D2) and Courtney Boyd to Dixie State University (NCAA D2). The freshman on the team ended their sophomore season with a 31-6 record and a back-to-back national championship in 2008. Here is where they transferred the following season: Allie Lindemann to Siena University (NCAA D1), Rachele Monroe to University of New Orleans (NCAA D1), Ashley Gorsh to University of New Orleans (NCAA D1), Breann Hill to Marquette University (NCAA D1) and Lauren Thomas-Johnson to Marquette University (NCAA D1).

2006 Men's Golf - Individual TJ Redding

The 2006 NJCAA DII Men's Golf National Championship was held at Goose Pond Colony Golf Course in Scottsboro, Alabama. T.J. Redding won the school's first NJCAA Individual National Title, making it the fifth National Championship for Kirkwood Athletics. Thanks to the blazing guns of Kirkwood's Men's Golf Team, the top two individuals in the national finals were first-round leader T.J. Redding with his second five-under-par 67 and teammate Cedric Bertin at 68. Kirkwood moved from a tie for fourth in the team race into the lead after 54 holes with a four-player composite of 285-291-283–859. Redding moved back to the top of the individual leaderboard with his 67-74-67–208, followed by teammate Bertin at 70-72-68–210. In the final day of the National Tournament, Redding shot a 69 bringing his total to 277. Bertin shot a 75 ending the tournament with a score of 285, finishing sixth. Redding's 277 score placed him with the third-lowest score all-time in the national tournament. Redding not only won the NJCAA DII Men's Golf Individual National Championship, but he also earned first-team All-American honors in 2006. Kirkwood ended with a four-player composite of 285-291-283-295--1154, finishing as National Runner-Up behind Darton College (Georgia) who won with a score of 1145.

The 2003 Kirkwood Volleyball team won the school's fourth NJCAA National Title and the first for the Eagle Volleyball program. Coach DeAnn Woodin's team went 40-13. The Eagles defeated Scottsdale Community College in the championship match by a score of (3-1) 28-30, 30-19, 30-15, 30-28. The '03 team sent sophomores Mary Jo Ament to Mount Mercy College and Megan Wittenberg to Metro State University.

The 2002 Kirkwood Women's Basketball team won the school's third NJCAA National Title. Coach Kim Muhl's team went 33-3, winning their second title in five seasons. After Muhl's 1997 championship, he led the Eagles to a 5th place finish in 1999 and a regional runner-up finish in 2000. Coach Muhl was awarded Region XI Coach of Year for the sixth time in his career (1990- 1995- 1997- 1998- 1999- 2002) and named Outstanding Coach of the Tournament for the second time (1997- 2002). The Eagles defeated Penn Valley Community College (Missouri) in the championship game by a score of 76-47. The '02 team sent sophomores Ada Powers to St. Edwards University (NCAA D2), Tammy Sandquist to Graceland University (NAIA), Erin Fantroy to Fairmont State University (NCAA D2), Mindy Sywassink to James Madison University (NCAA D1) and Meg Tierney to Southwest Missouri State (NCAA D1). The freshman on the team ended their sophomore season with a 31-6 record and a 4th place finish at the 2003 national tournament, here is where they transferred: Robin Sullivan to Winona State University (NCAA D2), Mandey Evans to Winona State University (NCAA D2) and Vanessa Schrock to Arkansas State University (NCAA D1).

The 1998 Kirkwood Men's Basketball team won the school's second NJCAA National Title, the first for the Men's Basketball program. Coach Chris Jans's team went 31-6 and started Kirkwood's annual appearance in the national tournament. The Eagles defeated Sinclair Community College (Ohio) in the championship game by a score of 73-61. The '98 team sent sophomores Ericson Beck to the University of South Alabama (NCAA D1), Brandon Welsch to Robert Morris University (NCAA D1), and Jeremy Wilson to Lewis University (NCAA D2). The freshman on the team ended their sophomore season with a 21-11 record, a conference championship, and finished 2nd in the region. Here is where they transferred: Curt Albert to Grand View University (NAIA) and Andrew Robinson to Chaminade University (NCAA D2).

The 1997 Kirkwood Women's Basketball team won the school's first NJCAA National Title. Coach Kim Muhl's team went 34-3 and was the cornerstone team for Kirkwood's climb to national dominance. The Eagles defeated Carl Sandburg College (Illinois) in the championship game by a score of 76-67. Coach Muhl was awarded Region XI Coach of Year for the third time in his career (1990-1995-1997) and named Outstanding Coach of the Tournament for the first time. The '97 team sent sophomores Angie Ryan to Stetson University (NCAA D1), Jessi Vercande to Kansas Benedictine University (NCAA D2), and Allison Iverson to Southeast Missouri State University (NCAA D1). The freshman on the team ended their sophomore season with a 32-5 record and a 5th place finish at the 1998 national tournament, here is where they transferred: Melissa Piper to Morningside University (NCAA D3), Desiree Francis to Iowa State University (NCAA D1) and Julie Baker to Panhandle State University (NCAA D2).
