Eagles upset No. 19 DMACC in regional

Friday, 10 May 2019 19:30 Metro Sports Report Kirkwood - Kirkwood Home

CLINTON – The Kirkwood baseball team picked the right time to play one of its best games of the season Friday.

The Eagles walloped 19th-ranked DMACC, 10-0, in six innings in the winner's bracket semifinals of the regional tournament as Ashford Field.

Kirkwood (33-18) will face Southeastern (40-17) in the winner's bracket finals Saturday at 6 p.m., needing two victories to win the regional title for the second straight year.

The Eagles are the No. 5 seed in the regional, but they've already defeated No. 4 seed Northeast and No. 1 seed DMACC in the first two rounds. Northeast and DMACC both won their regular-season series against Kirkwood this year, 3-1, but the Eagles have made amends in the postseason.

Carter Lawler (5-3) pitched a strong game against DMACC. He pitched a  complete game, allowing only three hits in six innings with six strikeouts and three walks.

Kirkwood has been choppy at times this season, but the Eagles displayed good pitching, good hitting, and good defense in the same game Friday to win easily.

Kal Youngquist and Zion Pettigrew were both 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Eagles. Youngquist had a two-run double in the first inning and Pettigrew followed with a two-run double in the second inning to point the Eagles in the right direction. Youngquist finished with two doubles.

Levi Usher went 2-for-3 in the leadoff spot with a triple, two stolen bases, and four runs. Taylor Jackson was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
