No. 9 Eagles Split at Parkland Tournament
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The ninth-ranked Kirkwood volleyball team split their matches this past weekend at the Parkland Tournament in Champaign, Illinois. The Eagles dropped both of their matches on Friday, losing to Division I John A. Logan, 2-3, and Lincoln Land, 0-3. Kirkwood was able to bounce back on Saturday by sweeping both Division I Vincennes and Muskegon.
The Eagles' opening match on Friday versus Division I John A. Logan saw Kirkwood take a commanding 2-1 lead before the Vols fought their way back to square up the match in the fourth, 25-22, and ultimately taking the final set, 15-12, for the 3-2 win.
Freshman Ady Wintermote's double-double led the Eagles with match-highs 19 kills and 26 digs. Sophomore Margaret Micka had double-double of her own, recording 18 kills and 19 digs.
Freshman Lauren Keane posted a match-high 24 assists while fellow freshman Grace Swenning dished out 19.
Freshman Brianna Eberhardt chipped in with 21 digs and sophomore McKenzie Petersen had a match-high eight blocks.
Following the five-setter, the Eagles ran out of steam for Friday's nightcap against No. 8 Lincoln Land as the Eagles got swept by scores of 23-25, 20-25, 21-25.
Wintermote again paced the Eagles with another double-double of 10 kills and 15 digs to go along with four blocks. Micka nearly posted a double-double with nine kills and a team-high 16 digs.
Keane once again led the Eagles with 20 assists. Micka recorded a team-high five blocks while Petersen and freshman Haleigh Durnin each had three.
Moving on to Saturday, it was completely different story for the rejuvenated Eagles as they made quick work of Division I Vincennes and Muskegon, sweeping both in straight sets to end the tournament with a 2-2 record.
Against Vincennes, Wintermote and Micka both posted double-double with 12 kills apiece and 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
Keane led the Eagles with 18 assists while Swenning chipped in with 13 of her own.
Durnin recorded a match-high four blocks to go along with her four kills.
In the Eagles' final match versus Muskegon, Wintermote posted her fourth straight match with a double-double, going for a match-high 20 kills and 15 digs. Micka made it three matches out of four of posting a double-double of her own with 12 kills and a match-high 21 digs.
The Eagles dished out 42 assists led by Keane's 21 and Swenning's 19.
Eberhardt collected in 15 digs for the Eagles and Keane chipped in with nine.
Petersen led the Eagles defense at the net by notching a match-high six blocks while Durnin recorded four.
Kirkwood (14-8 overall, 3-0 ICCAC) will have the mid-week game off as they prepare for the Johnson County Tournament this upcoming weekend. The Eagles will face off against No. 11 Cowley County, No. 3 Central (NE), Johnson County, and North Platte.
