#14 Kirkwood Softball Caps Perfect Weekend with Four Wins

Cedar Rapids, IA- The Kirkwood Community College softball team closed out their regular season in dominant fashion, going 4-0 over the weekend with back-to-back sweeps of Hawkeye Community College and Northeast Community College. The Eagles celebrated Sophomore Day on Sunday with two more decisive victories.

Kirkwood opened the weekend on Saturday with an offensive explosion against Hawkeye. In Game 1, the Eagles overwhelmed Hawkeye 18-1 in five innings, piling up 16 hits. Peyton Johnson led the way with four hits and four RBIs, while Brenna Ross added two doubles and four RBIs. Jenna Thurm also homered and drove in four runs. On the mound, Peyton Paulsen picked up the win, striking out six over three innings.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Kirkwood kept the momentum going with an 8-0 shutout. Natalie Vitek tossed a one-hit complete game, striking out five. Peyton Johnson launched a home run and drove in four runs to pace the Eagles' offense. Jenna Thurm also tallied three hits and an RBI as Kirkwood completed the sweep.

Sunday's action began with a dominant 10-0 win over Northeast. Kirkwood pounded out 11 hits, including home runs from Kiya Johnson and Jenna Thurm. Ross delivered a two-hit, four-RBI performance, while Thurm knocked in three runs. Paulsen earned her 24th win of the season with four scoreless innings.

The Eagles saved their biggest outburst for the final game, defeating Northeast 20-0. Kirkwood recorded 15 hits, with Brenna Ross, Sophia Kreutner, and Jenna Thurm combining for 14 RBIs. Kreutner belted a home run and drove in five. Jessa DeMoss pitched four strong innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five.

Next up, the third-seeded Kirkwood Eagles head to the Region 11-B Softball Tournament in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where they will face Northeast at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 2.
