No. 7 Eagles Go 5-1 in Kansas

The No. 7 ranked Kirkwood softball had a good showing this past weekend, leaving Kansas with a 5-1 record against quality teams.

Starting things off on Friday, the Eagles swept a doubleheader versus No. 5 Johnson County, 8-5 and 14-4, in Overland Park, Kansas.

Freshman Lauren Kuch went 5-for-7 with six RBIs Friday as the seventh-ranked Kirkwood softball team swept fifth-ranked Johnson County, 8-5 and 14-4, in Overland Park, Kan.

The Eagles raised their record to 6-0.

Kuch went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in the first game. Hannah Mauser was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Lauren Klaahsen was 2-for-4 with  two RBIs and Audra Bridenstine was also 2-for-4. Natalie Halvorson got the win.

Kuch went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the 14-4 victory in the second game, which was stopped after five innings by the mercy rule. Rachel  Stewart was 3-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Bridenstine had two more hits and two RBIs. Monika Bevans drove in three runs.

DoniRae Mayhew and Alli Sprague split the pitching, with Mayhew going 2 2/3 innings for the win.

On Saturday, the Eagles traveled to Concordia, Kansas for the Cloud County Spring Classic, splitting the games on day one of the event.

The Eagles topped Central Community College-Columbus, 8-5, in their first game and lost to 16th-ranked Highland Community College, 9-1, in their second outing.

DoniRae Mayhew belted two home runs, drove in three runs and scored three times in the 8-5 victory over Central. She also was the winning pitcher, with seven strikeouts in six innings.

Rachel Stewart went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer and two RBIs in the first game. Lauren Kuch was also 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Mayhew went 2-for-3 in the 9-1 loss to Highland. Natalie Halvorson suffered her first loss of the season.

The Eagles bounced back well on Sunday's final day of the Classic in two lopsided victories.

Rachel Stewart went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs in a 20-8 victory over Barton, then went 3-for-4 with two more homers and five RBIS in an 18-1 stroll by Southeast Community College.

Stewart, a freshman middle infielder from Davenport, scored seven runs for Kirkwood.

The seventh-ranked Eagles belted 10 homers Sunday and finished with a 5-1 record on their weekend trip through Kansas, raising their overall mark to 9-1.

Monika Bevans was 6-for-7 Sunday with two doubles, a triple and four runs scored. Lauren Kuch was 5-for-7 with two homers, three RBIs and six runs. Audra Bridenstine was 5-for-7 with two RBIs and four runs.

Kenady Waugh finished 4-for-6, belted a home run and scored five times. DoniRae Mayhew was 4-for-6 with two homers and six RBIs. Skylar Ryan socked a grand slam against Barton.

Natalie Halvorson was the winning pitcher against Barton. Mayhew got the win against Southeast with nine strikeouts and no earned runs.
