
#7 Eagles Split Mississippi Weekend
Decatur, MS- The #7 ranked Kirkwood Eagles headed south this past weekend to somewhat warmer temperatures to play down in Decatur, Mississippi.
Game 1- Kirkwood 2, Southwest Mississippi 0
The Eagle offense jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, with Jaxon Schumacher plating two on a triple to deep right field. Those would be the only two runs by the Kirkwood offense in the game, however, it was enough to get the job done. Andrew Carroll got the starting nod vs. Southwest Mississippi and was stellar on the mound. The RS Sophomore went 5 2/3 shutout innings with 5 strikeouts to earn his first win of the 2025 season. Josh Loren came in the 7th inning to earn his second save of the season in two tries.
Game 2- Kirkwood 0, Wallace State-Hanceville 2
Pitching was once again stellar for the Kirkwood Eagles. Boede Rahe got the start in game 2 and was lights out, going toe to toe with Wallace State's ace. He threw 5 shutout innings with 10 strikeouts and only two hits given up. Jackson Niederwerder came in relief and picked up where Rahe started. He gave up zero runs in the 6th, 7th, and 8th, taking the game to extra innings. However, the Eagles fell short, giving up a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 10th inning to lose the game 2-0.
Game 3- Kirkwood 2, East Central 11
In the first game of the day, the Eagles faced off against #1 ranked East Central. Alex Altmann led off the game with a double and later scored on a double by Cal Sullivan to put the Eagles up 1 in the top of the 1st. East Central responded with 4 runs of their own to make it 4-1 after the 1s. Kirkwood would plate another in the second with a triple by Ty Andrews and later scoring on a double by Nathan Motl to make it 4-2. It wouldn't be enough as East Central scored 2 in the 5th and 5 in the 6th, finishing the game 11-2 to move the Eagles to 3-4 early on in the season.
Game 4- Kirkwood 15, Wallace State-Hanceville 1
The offense was really rolling in the final game of the weekend for the Eagles. Alex Altmann led off the game with a double and scored on a Landon Frost single in the 1st to make it 1-0. The Eagles would keep the pressure on, scoring in every inning of the game, including one in the 2nd, four in the 3rd, and three runs in the 4th, 5th, and 6th innings. Cal Sullivan finished the day 4 for 5 with 3 runs, Jaxon Schumacher had two HRs and 5 RBIs, and Nathan Motl and Lane Spieker each hit a HR of their own. Reece Wrage got the start and went 5 shutout innings with 4 strikeouts and only 1 hit given up to earn his first win of the season to move the Eagles to 4-4.
