Baseball Splits With No. 17 Johnson County

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - The Kirkwood baseball team began the season with a series split versus No. 17 Johnson County this past weekend.

Kirkwood began the season Friday afternoon with a 7-4 loss. The Eagles scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull within 4-3, but Johnson County responded with three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 7-3 advantage.

Kirkwood scored in the top of the ninth for the final tally.

The Eagles committed six errors in the ballgame, including two by all-star shortstop Korry Howell.

Starting pitcher Cameron Leff allowed four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Cameron Cowan struck out eight batters in 3 2/3 innings in relief, but was the victim of the three unearned runs in the eighth.

Taylor Jackson and Kal Youngquist had two hits for Kirkwood. Izaya Fullard, Chili Moseley and Max McCay had RBIs.

Bouncing back on Saturday, the Eagles erupted for nine runs in the third inning and whipped Johnson County, 16-10, in the second game of their four-game weekend series.

Izaya Fullard went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs for Kirkwood (1-1). He also scored three times. Brandon Sanchez belted a home run and collected three RBIs. Cal Clark socked a solo homer.

Max McCay went 3-for-5 for the Eagles. Taylor Jackson scored three runs. Clark and Chili Moseley had two hits. Ellison Hanna had two RBIs.

Will Rodruck picked up the victory in relief for Kirkwood.

For Sunday's twin bill, Kirkwood split a doubleheader with Johnson County.

The Eagles won the first game, 9-4, in eight innings. Johnson County took the nightcap, 4-3.

Kirkwood (2-2) and Johnson County (8-3) split the four-game series in Kansas.

The first game was tied, 4-4, after seven innings. The Eagles plated five runs in the top of the eighth for the victory.

Kaden Wadle pitched 2 1/3 shutout innings for the Eagles in the opener and got the victory in relief.

Izaya Fullard went 2-for-5 in the first game and scored a pair of runs. Kal Youngquist and Max McCay drove in two runs. Ellison Hanna scored twice.

Youngquist went 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBIs for Kirkwood in the second game. Cal Stalzer surrendered only two earned runs in 5 1/3 innings but took the loss.

Fullard, a freshman from Iowa City West, went 7-for-15 in the four game series with a home run, six RBIs and .467 batting average.
