#9 Kirkwood Eagles Softball Battles in Mississippi

Mississippi - The 9th-ranked Kirkwood Eagles softball team embarked on a challenging journey south this past weekend, facing off against tough competition in a six-game stretch in Mississippi. Despite enduring their fair share of ups and downs, the Eagles showcased their resilience and competitive spirit, finishing the weekend with a commendable 3-3 record.

The journey began on Thursday with a doubleheader against Northwest Mississippi, where Kirkwood faced a formidable opponent. Despite putting up a valiant effort, the Eagles fell short in both contests. The first game was a nail-biting affair that extended into extra innings, with Kirkwood holding a narrow lead late in the game. However, Northwest rallied back to snatch the victory in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the second game, Kirkwood battled hard but ultimately couldn't overcome Northwest's dominance, resulting in a 7-2 defeat.

Undeterred by their opening-day setbacks, Kirkwood bounced back with a vengeance on Friday, treating fans to a thrilling showdown against Pearl River. Trailing early in the game, the Eagles mounted a remarkable comeback, highlighted by a dramatic bottom-of-the-ninth walk-off victory. Kylie Schult's clutch double and Sailor Hall's game-winning triple sealed the deal for Kirkwood, capping off a memorable comeback victory. Jenna Sprague's stellar relief pitching performance played a pivotal role in securing the win, as she shut down Pearl River's offense to clinch the victory.

Despite suffering a loss against Hinds, Kirkwood continued to showcase their offensive firepower and resilience. The Eagles out-hit their opponent and put together a strong offensive showing, led by Rachael Schlotter and Peyton Johnson. Despite the disappointment of defeat, Kirkwood remained undaunted, regrouping to deliver dominant performances in their remaining matchups.

On Saturday, Kirkwood unleashed an offensive onslaught against Mississippi Gulf Coast, cruising to a commanding 11-1 victory. Kirkwood put up 8 runs in the first inning alone. The Eagles' explosive bats powered them to victory, with Peyton Johnson's homer and contributions from Sydney Roe, Kiya Johnson, Lexi Hines, Sophia Kreutner, Rachael Schlotter, and Brenna Ross leading the charge.

Closing out the weekend in style, Kirkwood continued their offensive clinic against Holmes, securing a convincing 12-4 win. Brenna Ross's flawless performance at the plate and Peyton Driscoll's solid pitching effort propelled the Eagles to victory once again, with Sydney Roe driving in five runs to lead Kirkwood's offensive charge. Kirkwood put up 14 hits in both the Mississippi Gulf Coast game along with the Holmes win.

The Eagles are back on the road again next weekend as they trek to Kansas City to take on Rock Valley and Kansas City Community College.
