#10 Eagles Go 3-1 on the Weekend

Cedar Rapids, IA- The 10th-ranked Kirkwood Eagles Softball Team kicked off their first home stand of the year with NIACC and Northeast this past weekend. The Eagles went 3-1 over the 4-game stand, showcasing some dominant offense in the process. 

In the first game, Kirkwood took on the NIACC Trojans. Although NIACC was the first to get on the board in the top of the first, the Eagles quickly responded by putting up 4 runs of their own in the same inning. This was off of Sailor Hall's single, which scored one run, and an error by the Trojans scored three more runs. A single by Peyton Johnson extended the Kirkwood lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the second. The Eagles tallied 12 hits during the game. Kyle Schult, Sailor Hall, Delia Schwartz, Lexi Hines, Rachael Schlotter, and Peyton Johnson each drove in one run for Kirkwood. The Eagles also had four stolen bases in the game. The final score was 9-4 with Kirkwood on top. 

The second game of the day started the same as the first with NIACC putting up runs in the top of the first, however, this time, Kirkwood didn't respond with runs of their own. Sailor Hall drove the middle of the lineup, leading Kirkwood With two runs batted in. The left fielder went 3-for-4 on the day. Sophia Kreutner also collected two hits for the Eagles in two at-bats. Kirkwood ultimately fell to the Trojans by a score of 3-5. 

The next two games against the Northeast Hawks would have the same theme, a lot of runs. Kirkwood jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first after Sailor Hall doubled, scoring one run, and Sydney Roe singled, scoring two runs. The Eagles added four more runs in the second inning off of three hits. Grace Zaugg hit a solo home run to center field, Hall doubled again, scoring one run, and Kyle Schult doubled, scoring two runs. Jenna Sprague earned the win for Kirkwood giving up two hits and zero runs over five innings while striking out three. Kirkwood cruised to the easy win over 5 innings, 10-0. 

The last game of the weekend looked a lot like the first. With a final score of 21-0 over 5 innings, the bats of the Eagles stayed hot. Grace Zaugg drove in 5 runs on 3 hits. She hit a grand slam to left field in the 4th inning, singled in the 2nd, and hit a double in the third. Kirkwood got on the board in the bottom of the 1st after Sailor Hall hit into a fielder's choice but one run was scored, Brenna Ross doubled, scoring one run, an error scored two runs, and Rachael Schlotter doubled, scoring two runs. Kirkwood put up six more runs in the second inning to extend their lead to 12-0. Hall homered to left field, Zaugg singled, and Kreutner doubled. Ultimately, Kirkwood put up 15 hits in the game. 

Next up for Kirkwood is Iowa Lakes this Wednesday at home.
