#9 Kirkwood Goes 4-0 on the Weekend

Cedar Rapids, IA- Kirkwood Softball continued its winning ways this weekend when the Ellsworth Panthers and Iowa Central Tritons came into town. #9 Kirkwood (34-10, 15-1 ICCAC) came into their first game on Saturday against the Panthers riding a 14-game win streak, and with the weekend series including their Sophomore Day, the Eagles had a lot to play for.

Kirkwood kicked off the first game of the series against Ellsworth in much the same way as they have over their win streak, and that is by scoring in the first inning. Delia Schwartz drew a walk, scoring one run, and Sophia Kreutner singled, scoring two runs. The Eagles added three more runs in the bottom of the 2nd off of four hits. Brenna Ross hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Sydney Roe homered to right field, scoring two. Peyton Paulsen started the game pitching for Kirkwood. She gave up one hit and zero runs over 5 innings, striking out four. Kirkwood would take the game by a score of 8-0. The second game of the series would prove to be a closer one with the game being dictated by tough pitching. Jenna Sprague started the game for Kirkwood and would record 20 outs for her team. She gave up 5 hits and 1 run while striking out 7 and walking 1. The game was tied going into the 6th inning at 1-1 before Lexi Hines singled scoring one run, giving Kirkwood the 2-1 victory.

The second series of the weekend against Iowa Central was the Eagle's Sophomore Day. The team would celebrate its seven sophomores, Kylie Schult, Sailor Hall, Grace Zaugg, Delia Schwartz, Jenna Sprague, Sydney Roe, and Lexi Hines. The first game against the Titans would prove to be electric. Iowa Central would jump out to the 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st and the Eagles would tie it up in the bottom of the 3rd off a Brenna Ross single. The game would go into extra innings at 2-2 until the bottom of the 9th when Sydney Roe would hit a walk-off homer to left field, scoring two runs to win the game 4-2. She would continue that trend into the second game against the Tritons, hitting two more home runs in 2nd and 4th inning. Kirkwood would jump out to a lead in the 2nd inning after Roe's home run, Kyle Schultz's single, scoring one run, and Lexi Hines hitting a home run to center field, scoring three runs. Kirkwood would ultimately pull off the victory 9-7.

The Eagles will travel to Marshalltown this Tuesday for a doubleheader starting at 2 PM.
