They say basketball is a game of runs and the Kirkwood Eagles proved that Friday night in their 98-25 victory over Sauk Valley in the Kirkwood Classic.
 
Leading 11-5 with 5:08 left in the first quarter, the Eagles would amp up their defensive pressure and go on a 33-0 run to take a 44-5 lead with 3:18 remaining in the first half.
 
Kirkwood (3-0) forced Sauk Valley into 34 first-half turnovers to take a comfortable 48-8 lead at halftime.
 
The Eagles would use another impressive 24-0 run in the third quarter to extend their lead and cruise to the 98-25 victory.
 
Freshman Kennedy Blakely scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Eagles in scoring. The freshman guard from Hammond, IN also recorded five steals in the victory.
 
Three other Eagles finished in double figures scoring. Sophomore Jenna Twedt added 16 points, while sophomores Kaliyah Sain and Ellah Kissell both scored 12 points.
 
The Eagles forced Sauk Valley into 51 turnovers, which led to 70 points off of those turnovers.
 
Kirkwood returns to action Saturday night, as they will conclude the Kirkwood Classic by hosting Illinois Central at 8:00 pm in Johnson Hall.
