Wedeking whiffs 18 for Kirkwood

MASON CITY - Kori Wedeking pitched a masterpiece for the Kirkwood softball team Monday.

Wedeking tossed a four-hitter and struck out 18 batters as the eighth-ranked Eagles trimmed NIACC, 1-0, in nine innings in the first game of a doubleheader.

Kirkwood won the second game, 10-2.

Wedeking (13-2) walked only two batters and was in command throughout the ballgame.

The Eagles finally scored in the top of the ninth when Austyn Crees crossed the plate for the only run of the game. Kirkwood had only three hits in the game, including two by Olivia Richards.

The Eagles scored 10 runs on 13 hits in the second game, which was stopped after six innings by the eight-run mercy rule.

Sydney Albaugh went 3-for-3 with three runs, a homer, and two RBIs. Emilee Linder also scored three times. Crees and Reagan Schutte had two hits. Crees scored twice.

Payton Akers (6-3) allowed two runs in five innings for the victory.

Kirkwood raised its records to 23-8 overall and 12-4 in the ICCAC conference. NIACC fell to 6-12 overall and 4-12 in the league.
