Eagles swat 5 homers in sweep

The Kirkwood softball team belted five home runs Monday and swept an ICCAC doubleheader from Northeast Community College, 10-8 and 10-0, at the Kirkwood field.

The seventh-ranked Eagles have socked 60 homers in 35 games and rank fourth in the nation in round-trippers.

Kirkwood raised its records to 27-8 overall and 16-4 in the ICCAC with the twin-killing. The Eagles are locked in a hot battle for first place in the conference with DMACC (15-3) and Indian Hills (17-5).

Reagan Schutte hit two homers in the 10-8 victory in Game 1and went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs. Brooke Kilburg and Alli Ferrari also cleared the fences in the opener. Kilburg drove in three runs. Ferrari and Jessie Frasher had two hits. Ferrari scored twice.

Payton Akers (7-3) pitched a complete game for the victory with nine strikeouts.

Kori Wedeking (15-2) pitched four strong innings in Game 2 for the victory, allowing one hit with five strikeouts. Katie Cubbage tossed a 1-2-3 inning in relief.

Sydney Albaugh belted a grand slam in the nightcap and finished with five RBIs. She leads Kirkwood with 12 home runs.

Emilee Linder went 2-for-2 and scored twice. Schutte was 2-for-3 and also scored twice. Angie Gorkow had two hits. Alecea Mendoza and Austyn Crees scored twice.

Northeast Community College dropped all four games in the four-game series and fell to 10-24 overall and 4-18 in the league.
