#2 Eagles Take Down #10 Tritons
Cedar Rapids, IA- The #2 Kirkwood Eagles and #10 Iowa Central Tritons had a lot to play for on Wednesday night in Johnson Hall, namely a potential #1 seed in the ICCAC Region Tournament and a conference championship. With a win, Kirkwood would secure both.
Kirkwood got off to a quick start in set 1. A balanced offense along with capitalizing on some unforced errors allowed the Eagles to take the first set 25-18. The second set saw the Eagles playing catch-up for most of it. Down 18-14, Coach Dave Brown called a timeout to get his players to make one last push. They responded in kind, running off 3 straight points, and Johnson Hall would see a tie at 24-24 forcing the set to go into extra points. As she has done all year, Kaci Johnson stepped up in clutch time. She would hit a deceptive roll shot to the middle of the court to take the 1 point lead and then would cap the set off with a massive kill off an Iowa Central blocker. Kirkwood would start off set 3 with a 7-1 lead and they would never give that lead away, taking the match with a set 3 score of 25-19.
Kaci Johsnon put another triple-double on her resume Wednesday evening. The freshman had 10 kills, 20 assists, and 23 digs. She paced the team in each category. Libero Lily VanSeveren would add 15 digs, and Marissa Cahoy along with Emma Meester would each add 9 kills of their own.
With this win, Kirkwood has clinched the #1 seed in the ICCAC Regional Tournament along with becoming the outright regular season ICCAC conference champs.
The Eagles are in Fort Dodge this weekend to take on 3 more top 25 teams.
