NO.9 KCC SOFTBALL TOPS LAKERS

ESTHERVILLE - The ninth-ranked Kirkwood softball swept a pair of tight games Sunday to claim the weekend series against Iowa Lakes in Estherville.
 
The Eagles (24-10, 12-4) prevailed 4-3 and 4-2 Sunday with strong pitching from Kori Wedeking and Payton Akers.
 
Kirkwood and Iowa Lakes split a doubleheader Saturday. The Lakers took the first game, 10-9, and the Eagles rebounded with a 5-2 verdict in the nightcap.
 
Wedeking (10-3, 2.22) struck out nine batters in the 4-3 victory in the first game Sunday. Peggy Klingler went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Grace Lubben also had two RBIs. Emilee Linder and Annie Gahan had two hits.
 
Akers (9-5, 2.51) collected 11 strikeouts and did not allow an earned run in the 4-2 triumph Sunday. Kennedy Hill was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Linder was 2-for-2.
 
Kirkwood scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie the first game Saturday, 9-9, but Iowa Lakes scored in the bottom of the seventh for the 10-9 win.
 
Austyn Crees hit a home run and drove in three runs for the Eagles. Lubben was 2-for-4 with a homer and two runs. Alecea Mendoza had three RBIs. Klingler went 3-for-4. Neveah Hildebrandt had two hits. Reagan Schutte scored twice.
 
Wedeking struck out nine batters in the 5-2 victory in the nightcap Saturday. Schutte was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Lubben went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Linder had two hits. Gahan scored two runs.
