KCC baseball wins crazy doubleheader

It was a wild and crazy day for the Kirkwood baseball team Saturday. And highly successful.

The Eagles swept DMACC, 12-10 and 11-9, at the Kirkwood field to take the weekend series 3-1.

Kirkwood raised its records to 13-14 overall and 9-7 in the ICCAC. DMACC fell to 11-17 overall and 7-9 in the league.

The Eagles built a 9-0 lead after two innings in the opener on grand slams by Chase Moseley and Joel Vaske and a solo homer by Andrue Henry, but DMACC rallied and tied the score at 10-10 with a seven-run explosion in the fifth inning.

Kirkwood responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Josh Fitzgerald and a ringing RBI double by Trevor Burkhart to regain the lead at 12-10.

Frankie Cresta (3-0), who pitched three scoreless innings in relief, shut the door in the sixth and seventh innings for the victory.

Fitzgerald went 3-for-3 in the opener and scored three times. Burkhart, Alex Pendergast and Henry had two hits. Burkhart and Pendergast scored two runs.

Kirkwood was trailing 9-4 in the nightcap, but the Eagles exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the eighth and held on for the 11-9 verdict and the sweep.

Pendergast and Tyler Tscherter walloped home runs for Kirkwood in Game 2. Andrew Nord went 4-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs and three RBIs. Pendergast finished 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs. Tscherter and Casey Sole had two RBIs. Vaske and Tscherter scored twice..

Noah Van Veldhuizen (1-1) picked up the victory in relief. Graysen Drezek got the final out of the game for his first save.
