Eagles hold off Cobras in a battle of ranked teams

A battle of teams ranked in the latest NJCAA poll went the way of the third-ranked Kirkwood Eagles on Friday night as they defeated the sixth-ranked Parkland Cobras 72-50 at the Illinois Central Classic in Peoria, IL.

Kirkwood (3-0), who never trailed in the contest, was able to take control early on as they would lead 17-9 after one-quarter of play.

The Eagles would stretch that lead to 35-17 at halftime.

However, foul trouble mounted up quickly for the Eagles in the third quarter, as Parkland would cut the lead to single digits heading into the fourth quarter.

Parkland would get within seven points at 46-39 early in the fourth quarter, but Kirkwood answered and stretched the lead back to double digits.

Sophomore Ashley Tull led the way for Kirkwood with 20 points and a game-high 8 rebounds.

Sophomores Tasia Jordan & Dom Rodriquez also finished in double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively.

The Eagles will be back in action Saturday afternoon as they take on the host school and fourth-ranked Illinois Central Cougars at 2:00 pm.
