#2 Eagles Triumph Over Trojans
Mason City, IA- Second-ranked Kirkwood used a big run to open the game & then withstood a late run by NIACC to come away with an 81-72 victory Wednesday night in Mason City.
Kirkwood (24-2 / 15-1) used an 18-4 run over the first six minutes of the game en route to a 25-6 lead after a quarter of play.
NIACC responded in the second quarter, as they cut what was at one point a 21-point Kirkwood lead down to single digits at 37-28 at halftime.
Following halftime is when freshman Jenna Twedt really heated up from three-point range, as she knocked down 5 three-pointers in the third quarter to help the Eagles increase their lead heading into the fourth quarter.
NIACC would use a 15-7 run to draw within four points at 66-62 with 5:07 remaining in the game.
Kirkwood was able to make enough big plays down the stretch to hold off the upset bid by the Trojans.
Twedt, who finished with a career-high 31 points, tied a school record as she knocked down 9 three-pointers (9-16). The freshman guard also added 6 assists & 4 steals.
Sophomore Demetria Prewitt recorded another double-double as she finished with 22 points & 10 rebounds.
Sophomore Zhakyla Evans finished with 10 points & a career-high 10 assists.
Kirkwood hits the road again this Saturday, as they take on Northeast in Norfolk, NE at 1:00 pm.
